Optimal Control of Laser Induced Transient Birefringence in Liquid Crystals
نویسنده
چکیده
Optimal control theory is applied to design a laser pulse to produce an anisotropic change of the refraction index in the vicinity of the isotropic-nematic phase transition in liquid crystals. The laser induced birefringence originates from the orientational anisotropy induced by the laser eld that is enhanced signiicantly due to the excluded volume eeect. The shape of the optimal pulse is analyzed for diierent values of relaxation time and diierent molecule concentrations.

Investigation of Thermal Dispersion and Thermally-Induced Birefringence on High-Power Double Clad Yb:Glass Fiber Laser
In this work the effects of heat generation on the modes of Yb:Glass double clad fiber laser were investigated. The thermal dispersion and thermally-induced birefringence were considered when the gain medium becomes an anisotropic medium. The results showed considerable modifications of laser modes profiles, in particular for transfer magnetic (TM) and transfer electric (TE) modes which their p...
متن کاملUv Stability of High Birefirngence Liquid Crystals
High birefringence (Dn 0.4) liquid crystals (LCs) are desirable for cholesteric displays, laser beam steering and optical switches for telecommunications [1]. A major concern for the high birefringence LCs is their ultraviolet (UV) stability. As the conjugation length increases, the LC absorption tail shifts toward k 1⁄4 365 nm, the major UV light used for curing sealant. The material degradati...
متن کاملMagnetic-field-induced birefringence in a homeotropic ferronematic liquid-crystal wedge.
The magnetic-field-induced birefringence in wedged homeotropic ferronematic liquid crystals is studied. Theoretical results for small distortions are obtained in terms of the elastic continuum theory of liquid crystals. The results of birefringence measurements are in good agreement with the predictions of the theory.
متن کاملEnhancement in crystalline perfection and optical properties of Benzophenone single crystals: A remarkable effect of liquid crystals
The remarkable enhancement in crystalline perfection of Benzophenone crystals, induced by the presence of liquid crystals in melt during the growth, been investigated. The crystal structure was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. Nuclear magnetic resonance analyses depicted that liquid crystal molecules did not incorporate in the lattice of grown crystals. The high resolution X-ray diffracto...
متن کاملCumulative Birefringence Effects of Nanosecond Laser Pulses in Dye-doped Planar Nematic Liquid Crystal Layers
New cumulative effects in laser-induced birefringence have been observed under 10Hz-pulse-repetition-rate, nanosecond-duration laser irradiation of azo-dye-doped planarnematic liquid crystal layers at incident intensities I ∼ 1–10 MW/cm2. An irradiation geometry with the incident polarization parallel to the nematic director was used. This geometry does not permit a first-order electric field i...
